Creating a Love of Reading – CLOVER
To develop and foster a love of reading among students and teachers Happy Home School started the ClOVER reading programme in 2013. It has been a huge success since its inception.
The programme is managed by the Masood ul Hasan library of the HHS Society Campus. Reading material to the different HHS campuses is provided, monitored and replenished by the library.
After the morning assembly, when students enter their classes, they choose a book to read from racks kept in each class. Books visible all the time within easy reach in the classroom become a silent reminder to the students motivating them to read them.
This CLOVER period lasts for 20 minutes and students as well as teachers do no other activity except read a book of their choice during this time. Apart from reading, students also write book reviews which are assessed by teachers.
Students who show an active interest and love of reading are rewarded with the Eager Reader Award. Questionnaires are filled and interviews conducted to determine the deserving winners of this award.
CLOVER has also been promoted in underprivileged schools as part of Community Services by HHS. The school sends its staff to conduct a weekly CLOVER period at Safia Khan Memorial New Town Government Girls School and donates CLOVER boxes containing books, magazines, bookmarks and badges.
Besides, HHS students exhibited the CLOVER banner during the Children’s Literature Festival organized by Oxford University Press in February 2014 where the theme was ‘Promoting the Reading Culture and the Joys of Reading Books’.
CLOVER has been a resounding success and other schools have taken notice, sending their staff to visit HHS campuses to observe CLOVER activities such as the Clover Period.
